Soccer Starts!

Dear friends,

Tonight, I start a new adventure... co-coaching soccer for 11-12 year olds, including my two oldest children, Caleb and Tori. I'm really looking forward to coaching this team of 15 students from our community. If you're interested in keeping up to date on what's happening with our soccer team, check out my other blog, http://beausejoursoccer.blogspot.com/.

We are Blessed!

Dear friends,

We are blessed! Those words come right on the heels of a phone call from our mechanic who just confirmed our worst fears - our van needs a new transmission. And as I heard that report, I reflected on the challenges this past week of living life without an automobile - including having to ride my bike to work a couple of times. And then I began to reflect even further on the other multiple challenges we have had over the past couple of months:
  • The sewer backup in our basement - and subsequent ripping out of drywall, carpet, etc.
  • Our fridge, stove cooktop, microwave, and laptop computer all stopped working
  • My trip to the hospital a couple of weeks ago
But as I reviewed that list, and the health and financial challenges we've been facing, I realized that, in spite of all of those difficulties, we are SO BLESSED! I remember how World Vision Canada reported how nearly half the world's population lives on $2 a day, how 300 million children around the world experience hunger, and a child dies every 15 seconds from preventable diseases causes by contaminated water. Oh! It's good to remember these things, and to change our commercialized, Western World, keeping-up-with-the-Jones's way of thinking, to radically change our whole perspective on life! I could easily get upset and complain about all of the difficulties we're facing, or I can turn around and start making a list of all of our blessings...
  • We have a personal relationship with a good, loving Heavenly Father - our sins are forgiven, our names are written in the Lamb's book of life, and we are Heaven-bound!
  • We live in Canada, one of the richest and most prosperous nations in the world
  • We are happily married, and the Lord has blessed us with four amazing children
  • Our children are all alive and healthy and love the Lord
  • We have a roof over our heads, food in the cupboards, and warm beds to sleep in
  • We have a great church family and good friends who love and care for us
I could go on and on and talk about all of the many blessings that the Lord has given to us. So what do we have to complain about? Absolutely nothing... We are supremely blessed! And so I want to challenge you, the next time you feel like complaining when something goes wrong in your life - take a look at the world around you, and see how blessed you truly are compared to so many people in the world today.

"How we praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we belong to Christ. Long ago, even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the wonderful kindness he has poured out on us because we belong to his dearly loved Son. He is so rich in kindness that he purchased our freedom through the blood of his Son, and our sins are forgiven. He has showered his kindness on us, along with all wisdom and understanding." (Ephesians 1:3-8).

Praise the Lord - God is good!

With lots of love,
Pastor Chris

Prayer Shield - The Call to Prayer!

Prayer Shield - The Call to Prayer!

“Brethren, pray for us.” (1 Thess. 5:25).
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

The Lord has really impressed upon me the importance of recruiting a team of intercessors to pray for myself, and also to call His people to begin to be diligent to pray for their pastors. If you haven’t read the book Prayer Shield by Peter Wagner, I highly recommend that you pick it up. When I first read it several years ago, it really challenged me with both the urgency and sense of responsibility to all believers to pray for their pastors. Today’s devotional is an overview of the teaching contained in that book. My prayer is that it would motivate you to begin to pray for your pastor today, and indeed every day. Like the Apostle Paul pleaded with those to whom he ministered, I say, “Brethren, pray for us.” Pray for your pastors!

“You can help defend your leader from Satan’s attacks! Right now, someone you know is in desperate need of your prayers. It’s the person out on the front line, leading God’s army into the world to proclaim His good news. The enemy is doing everything he can to stop your pastor. But as a Christian, you have been given access to a greater power in this battle: God’s intercession.

Pastors, teachers, and all types of leaders depend a great deal on those who are praying for them—people like you who realize the importance of coming to their aid. The enemy knows where our leaders are vulnerable, and he attacks them at their weakest point. Through intercessory prayer, however, you—a mere human—can stand in the gap for them. You can influence the action of an almighty and all powerful God. As surprising as it is, this is the way the Lord chose to structure our relationship with Him.

If we aren’t praying through—if intercessory prayer is missing—the full extent of God’s power is often stifled in the lives and ministries of our leaders. They can’t do it alone! Pastors and other Christian leaders are needy people. But they are God's chosen ones to move His Kingdom forward. Faithful and intelligent intercession can release them to be all God wants them to be.”

I am convinced that most church members have little or no appreciation of the cost of being a pastor… If God is going to raise up a new army of intercessors who will support pastors and other Christian leaders in effective, fervent prayer, these intercessors need to know both the scope and they urgency of the task ahead of them… Over the past couple of decades, an alarming number of pastors have dropped out of the ministry for two main reasons: pastoral burnout and sexual immorality. The numbers have reached epidemic proportions.

Pastors Need Intercession. Every Christian needs intercession. But I do want to argue that pastors and other Christian leaders need intercession more than ordinary members of the Body of Christ. This may sound strange, but let me propose five reasons why I believe it is true.

1. Pastors Have More Responsibility and Accountability

2. Pastors Are More Subject to Temptation

3. Pastors Are More Targeted by Spiritual Warfare
Make no mistake about it, the higher up you go on the ladder of Christian leadership, the higher you go on Satan's hit list. The devil is characterized as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. If he has a choice, he will devour a leader before he will devour anyone else. And he will use every weapon in his arsenal to do it.

4. Pastors Have More Influence on Others
The fourth reason why pastors need intercession more than other Christians is that by the very nature of their ministry they have more influence on others. If a pastor falls, more people are hurt and set back in their spiritual lives than if others fall. The ripple effect is incredibly devastating. Strong Christians are crushed by the hypocrisy and betrayal they feel. Weak Christians take the pastor's behaviour as a license for them to do likewise…

5. Pastors Have More Visibility
Because pastors are up front, they are constantly subject to gossip and criticism. when church members have Sunday dinner, the pastor and the sermon of the morning are frequent topics of conversation… The pastor is closely observed and it is no secret. Just knowing this places a difficult burden on pastors and they need supernatural help to handle that situation well. Intercession opens the way for them to receive this help.

Intercession Improves Ministry: About 89 percent of those surveyed indicated that the prayer had caused a positive change in their ministry effectiveness. They reported more effectiveness in the use of their particular spiritual gifts, a higher level of positive response to their ministry, more discernment and wisdom from God, increased wholeness and completeness in Christ, improved attitudes, more evidence of the fruit of the Spirit, better personal prayer lives and heightened leadership skills. Pastors and other Christian leaders are needy people. But they are God's chosen ones to move His Kingdom forward. Faithful and intelligent intercession can release them to be all God wants them to be.

How do we pray for our pastors?
· Sun: Favour with God (spiritual revelation, anointing, holiness)
· Mon: Favour with others (congregation, ministry staff, unsaved)
· Tues: Increased vision (wisdom, enlightenment, motives, guidance)
· Wed: Spirit, Soul, Body (health, attitudes, spiritual wholeness)
· Thurs: Protection (temptation, deception, enemies)
· Fri: Finances (priorities, blessings)
· Sat: Family (general, spouse, children)

“No matter how well you pay your pastor, praise him or work for him, it is only through earnest, strategic prayer that you can ever really help him be an effective minister in the hands of Almighty God.” (Will Bruce, Pastors Need Prayer, Too).

(today's devotional quoted from Prayer Shield by Peter Wagner).

I want to challenge you to be a faithful intercessor for your pastors—pray for us! “Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:” (2 Thess. 3:1).

With love in the Lord Jesus,
Pastor Chris

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

The movie "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed" starring Ben Stein is due out in theatres this month. (Many of you will remember him as the boring economics teacher from the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off). Here's a review of the movie from http://www.answersingenesis.org/. Go to the movie website here http://www.expelledthemovie.com/playground.php and check out the trailer. Enjoy...

Don’t Miss the Expelled Movie Published February 20th, 2008 in Current Issues in the World, Ministry Updates On Tuesday in the Special Effects Theatre of the Creation Museum, a few specially invited guests and some AiG staff were privileged to be given a preview of the movie Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, which will be released in movie theaters across the country on April 18.

After seeing the movie, I urge all people NOT to miss it. It is eye-opening, astonishing, exposing, fascinating, entertaining, and intriguing! Ben Stein (presidential speechwriter, commentator, and comedian—and starring as the boring economics teacher in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) does a masterful job of exposing the overwhelming bias against belief in any intelligent design behind the origin of life on earth, something that is so rife through the scientific academic community.By likening what is happening in the secular scientific world in America to the construction of the Berlin Wall—a theme carried throughout the documentary with theme-appropriate comedy excerpts from old movies, together with very revealing interviews with leading scientists and other academics—this movie makes for the most powerful presentation of the anti-intelligent design bias in the secular world you will ever experience.

You will be shocked by what you see and hear because you will begin to experience the hypocrisy in the scientific world concerning so-called academic freedom. The interviews with God-hating atheist Richard Dawkins (from Oxford University) will stun you. At the end of the movie, Richard Dawkins, considered the world’s leading evolutionary spokesperson, makes one of the most amazing statements I have ever heard him utter—admitting, without realizing or understanding what he himself said, and totally contradicting the other statements he made, that there has to be an intelligence behind life on earth—something he rejects! You have got to see this clip in April to believe it!

This movie is a must! Christians, drag your non-Christian friends along—they will never be the same again. Challenge school board members in your local community to see this movie/documentary—pay for their tickets, but get them there!

World Hunger: Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow?

Dear friends,

I was watching the promo video for the 30 Hour Famine at World Vision Canada's website the other day, and discovered that contaminated water kills a child every 15 seconds. Can you imagine watching a two year old die from something as preventable as diarrhea? Access to clean water has a more dramatic effect on life than any other humanitarian effort – it can change everything for a child. Check these stats:
  • The wealthiest fifth of the world’s people consume an astonishing 86 percent of all goods and services, while the poorest fifth consume 1 percent.
  • Malnutrition can severely affect a child's intellectual development. Children who have stunted growth due to malnutrition score significantly lower on math and language achievement tests than do well-nourished children.
  • In the United States, 36.3 million people – including 13 million children – live in households that experience hunger or the risk of hunger. This represents approximately one in ten households in the United States.
  • Nearly 3 billion people – half the world’s population– live on less than $2 a day.
This weekend, the students in our church's youth group are getting hungry for change. They are just now beginning a 30 hour fast to raise money for World Vision Canada to help combat hunger, poverty and injustice around the world. As a motivation to help encourage them to go out and raise money, I told them that if they could double the amount they raised last year, then I would shave my head. So... my hair today... might be gone tomorrow. 300 million children around the world suffer from hunger - it's time to get involved and make a difference!

Lots of love,
Pastor Chris

Bible is America's Favorite Book

Bible is America's Favorite Book
NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - When it comes to literary pursuits in the United States most people agree on at least one thing -- the most popular book is the Bible, according to a new survey.

It came in first in a Harris Poll of nearly 2,513 adults but the second choice in the survey was not as clear cut.
"While the Bible is number one among each of the different demographic groups, there is a large difference in the number two favorite book," Harris said in a statement announcing the results.
Men chose J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and women selected Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" as their second-favorite book, according to the online poll.
But the second choice for 18- to 31-year-olds was J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, while 32- to 43-year-olds named Stephen King's "The Stand" and Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons."
(Source: http://news.yahoo.com/).

Of course as a pastor I was excited to read that news article this morning. My only concern of course was - even though it was rated the most popular book - is it being read? And I wonder too - if the same survey was done in Canada, would the Bible would come up as number one here?

To those of you reading this post today, I want to challenge you to read your Bibles. Let this quote from Charles Spurgeon, the Prince of Preachers, challenge your hearts today:

“The best food for you is the Word of God itself. Sermons and books are well enough, but streams that run for a long distance above ground gradually gather for themselves somewhat of the soil through which they flow, and they lose the cool freshness with which they started from the spring head. It is always best to drink at the well and not from the tank. You shall find that reading the Word of God for yourselves, reading it rather than notes upon it, is the surest way of growing in grace. Drink the unadulterated milk of the Word of God, and not of the skim milk and the water of man’s word.” (Charles Spurgeon, How to Read the Bible).

May God bless you today with an unquenchable hunger for His living, powerful Word!

Lots of love,
Pastor Chris

The House of Prayer

"And Jesus taught, saying to them, Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it a den of thieves." (Mark 11:17).

Dear friends,
If your church was gone tomorrow, would anyone in your community notice? That's a deep and thought-provoking question, isn't it? God has called us to be a light in our communities - He has blessed us to be a blessing! Our highest calling is to be a house of prayer - a place where people can encounter God through prayer, ministry and blessing. Let's remember that it's not about us - having a nice little holy huddle, a Christian club - us four and no more. No! God has placed us as a lighthouse in a dark world, to share His love and light with all of those that we would meet!
.
This past Sunday morning, I ministered a word to our congregation on "The House of Prayer." I encourage you to download this message, and let it challenge your heart today!

.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:19-20).
Here are five simple keys for you to put into practice and begin to be a person of prayer...
.
APPLICATION – THE CALL TO PRAYER:
1. Pray for the salvation of our neighbours in our community.
2. Pray for the Lord to help our church to shine brightly in our community – to be a light.
3. Look for opportunities to pray for, minister to, and bless all those we meet.
4. Pray for your pastor, ministry leaders, and missionaries.
5. Get a prayer partner – someone to pray together with.

With love in the Lord Jesus,
Pastor Chris

The Revival Generation

"Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done." (Psalm 78:4).

Dear friends,

For over 14 years, I served the Lord as a youth pastor, and even though I have transitioned into the next part of my calling as a lead pastor, I still have a heart for young people. This past weekend, when I attended The Filling Station: Glory youth conference in Surrey, BC, the Lord reminded me about His call upon this younger generation - the Revival Generation. My heart longs to see this generation get ahold of God, and to be consumed with a passion to burn brightly for Him in these last days, and usher in the return of the King. That's why I thank God for our youth leader, Al Buhler, who God has called to lead this revival generation into knowing God, being strong, and doing great exploits (Daniel 11:32b). However, I realize that as a lead pastor, I too have a part to play in equipping and releasing this emerging generation to be great in the Kingdom of God. I am more excited than ever about our Christian club at our middle school, and am praying that the Lord would bring revival into the midst of these young ones, and that they would see His strength, signs, wonders, healings, miracles, kingdom, power and glory!

Here are some photos from the Glory conference. May God stir you up to seek after Him today! "A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, You are my God; Early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; My flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land Where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, To see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You." (Psalm 63:1-3).

With love in Christ,
Pastor Chris
